concernedinkeowee, no doubt, all of the candidates in this presidential election have been mis-characterized, even flat out lies told about them. This is because, truth and honesty, no longer matter, it is "win" at all cost. I don't know all that much about Barack Obama, except for what I read and hear, and for that I refer you to my first sentence. What I do know is, he is a democrat, and democrats believe that government "Politicians" can do better for you than you can do for yourself. Just take a look at all the groups that have been focused on by the government for help, they are all in worse shape than the rest of the country. The Native Americans, the inner city communities, the people of Appalachia, I don't think you can say that they have prospered with government intervention in their lives. I think you can say exactly the opposite. I do, however, know about Sarah Palin, I live in Alaska and I know, first hand, what she has done for Alaska. Sarah Palin is a doer, not a talker. As Governor she has many accomplishments more, in my opinion, for the good of the people of Alaska than all of the Governors of the past 25 years. Please don't underestimate her ability or her experience. We are a state of extremes. From weather to wildlife, to women's rights. From cultural diversity, "Alaska is a crossroads for the world", to a classless citizenry. From world renowned scientific research and discovery, to being the first line of defense against the Russians. You may laugh at the joke about seeing Russia from Alaska, but it is true, during the cold war, Russia , often tested our defense capabilities. They still do.In short Alaska is not your average state. Google Alaska and see for your self, you might be surprised, and oh I forgot, Alaskans are more internet savvy than most all other states. There is fact in every thing that I have heard Sarah Palin say. She is not a light weight, she took on a very powerful oil industry and won. She took on corruption in the republican party and won. She put forth a proposal for an Alaska Gas Line, and won. She did stop the construction of the bridge at Ketchikan. All of these things are true. As far as higher education goes, especially in the Masters and PHD level, education can easily be overrated. People that are educated above their intelligence level can be more dangerous than an uneducated person. We have a lot of that today. Some people do not need a lot of education to be able to do good and make wise decisions, Sarah Palin is one of those. Check out the education level of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Sam Walton, Martin Luther King, Mother Teressa, the list is long, I hope you get the point. concernedinkeowee, I appreciate you taking your stand, that is what the USA is all about, we certainly don't want a one party government. I would like to ask you to take a second look at Sarah Palin, she would be good for the country, at this point in time. And I am not a republican.
Facts you say, I have a news flash for several of you. Any one that pays taxes in the city has an interest in the historic district.I believe, paying taxes, equates to "money, time and sweat". For Mr. Bright, the difference would be, Historic District regulations are enforced by city, tax paid, personnel. Anyone that pays those taxes has a right to have an opinion about the Historic District. Subdivision covenants are not enforced by city tax paid personnel. So what you Historic District people are doing is to use other peoples tax money to increase your property values. Why don't you untangle your self from the city and others by getting your neighbors together and drafting your own neighborhood covenants. All it takes is a majority yes vote by the property owners. Then you would not have bureaucrats or outsiders telling you what you can do. Please remember, when you try to use government money for personal gain, you may get more than you bargained for.
palmettoyankee, we are a nation of law, the law of the Constitution. Our Constitution is what has made this a great country, even with assaults against it by people like your self. Your kind of law is a first cousin to a law that allowed black people to be held as slaves. slavery was established in law, but it was not Constitutional. i suggest you read the Constitution and pay close attention to what it really says, had you done so before now, you may not of had to relocate to the south, away from the yankee hellholes that people of your kind have created. i just pray to God that you don't do the same thing here.
Mr. Nelson, "Were we directed from Washington when to sow, and when to reap, we would soon want bread." Thomas Jefferson. Planning and zoning is nothing more than a governmental tool used by the rich and powerful to eliminate competition with, or to enhance the value of, their land holdings. People came to America for the opportunity to own and to use the land. In Europe all of the land belonged to the rich and powerful. Every thing comes from the land, all life and all sustenance. The more restrictions you place on the land, the more poverty you create. The county has no conscience, feels no remorse and could care less whether my family lives or dies. The only ones that benefit from the county laws of land use and planing and zoning are the rich and powerful who manipulate the laws at will. Takes us right back to Europe does it not? Prove me wrong, post your and your family and friends financial holdings on line.
If having no abandoned mobile homes next to his business is such a valuable asset you would think the business owner would be willing to spend a few business expense dollars to pay for removal of the offensive homes. With the amount of business he says he is missing, it sounds to me like a few clean up dollars would be a very wise investment. Or could it be that his non-local customers look down their noses at the bones of poverty that are so prevalent in the up state area? In the past, with cotton mill slave wages, a mobile home was about all a local family could afford. Many excellent families were raised in them. The up state soil is stained red from the blood, sweat and tears of the hard working local people. If your gated community dwelling bigots can not stand the sight of the local peoples' history, tell them to move on, no one will miss them.
