The former junior brought up an excellent point without exactly saying it. Forcing someone to read a book is no way to get them to appreciate it. And summer reading at Seneca high is not a suggestion, it is required. They force every student to read the same book and we all know that every student has the same interests- that's why the whole concept is a bunch of crap. At least let a kid read a book that they are interested in. I have a sneaky suspicion that the majority of the administrators at Seneca don't know the research behind summer reading (benefits, etc.) but are requiring it because somebody at the district office thought of it while sitting on the throne one day after work and told them to do it.
It's a shame that recent college graduates desire employment in a k-12 setting, but can go elsewhere and immediately earn the same salary that they would be earning 10 years down the road in a k-12 setting.
No, people don't go into teaching because of the money but when you are asked to work from 8:00 am until late in the afternoon doing lesson plans on "your own time" then I can see how one might want to consider other options. I'm afraid that some of our best teachers that reside in Oconee county may be willing to commute to Pickens, Anderson, Greenville, or for that matter- a nearby Georgia school like Habersham, Franklin Co., etc.
Pay up or shut up, SDOC. If you want the best, you have to offer the best.
If a person determines that they want to bully someone, talking to a counselor isn't likely to help. A counselor cannot change a person's personality folks. Yeah, bring the bullied in the same room with the bully, let a fight break out in the midst of the meeting, and then watch the lawsuit go to work. Bullying is never fixed by counseling alone, it takes consistent disciplinary action from every staff member in a school, the support of district office officials, and proactive counseling activities. If you want to send a message to kids on the importance of the bullying law and consequences, then notify the kids of what could happen. They don't know so they don't care. Hold workshops throughout the year for students to learn what to do if they see it happening from their friends, etc. Just my opinion!
Huckabee is the only one I'm considering. Let's just say the Constitution was written by Bible-believing politicians. Our country was founded on the principles of God as our higher power. You don't have to look far to see the evidence. Pull out your wallet/pocketbook and read your money. "In God We Trust" is not only stamped on your money but it's all over the public government buildings in Washington D.C. Really though, I'd be thrilled if any Republican candidate won the presidency because that would mean that Osama and Willy's wife didn't.
Mr. Miller, Thanks for your dedication to the students at T-S. I know of many young teachers who only lasted for 1-5 years due to the paperwork overload, the amount of time invested in their work versus the amount of pay they receive, mandatory meetings beyond the paid school day with no comp. time offered. There are very few life long educators these days. Thanks again, Mr. Miller.
REDEYE: you seem to forget that your previous posts are saved. Being a USC fan, I guess you didn't like the billboard. However, it appears that Spurrier can't be trusted on his word just as you can't be trusted either. Enjoy the holidays at home this year. Look for me in Atlanta- I'll be wearing orange :)

Redye- No one forced USC to join the SEC. That was their own doing and has led to their own demise. You cannot ignore their loss to Vanderbilt either- that's definitely not an SEC powerhouse team. Fact is, we own USC head to head (64-37-4). I personally don't care who you root for as we don't need non-committals as fans anyway. USC has their share of classy and non-classy fans as does any team in the nation. That should be a non-factor in your decision.

Seems like Spurrier always speaks too soon..."We will never lose to Clemson again."
